Project Summary: The East Prince Health Care Facility
is a 180,000 square foot, 108 bed health care facility currently under
construction in Summerside, Prince Edward Island. When completed, the
facility will replace the existing Prince County Hospital and will offer
the public a much larger, modern health care facility. In designing this
facility, planners and designers were tasked to create a facility that
was cost efficient, technologically current, energy efficient, while
emphasizing the physical, emotional, spiritual and environmental aspect
of health.
Richardson Associates (1993) limited, together with Mulvey & Banani
International Inc., provided the full electrical design services for
this facility. The mandate of design was to provide an energy efficient,
user friendly and maintenance friendly electrical system.
The building's lighting system was designed in strict compliance with
the Illuminating Engineering Society's guidelines for Health Care
Facilities utilizing computer based lighting design programs. The net
result is a lighting system that utilizes a combination of leading edge
T-5 fluorescent lamp technology, as well as the current industry
standard of T-8 fluorescent and electronic ballasts.
The building's video surveillance system also incorporates the leading
edge digital video technology and digital storage technology thus
eliminating the conventional tape storage systems.
With respect to data systems, the local area data network (LAN) system
features the latest Category 6 and fibre optic data networking
technology. The system was designed to allow for the ultimate health
care goal of complete data network services to the bedside to help
physicians and health care givers alike to provide the best and most
complete health care available.
In addition to the above, other technologies and/or electrical design
features incorporated into this facility include:
 |
Computer based nurse call system. |
 |
Patient wandering system. |
 |
Patient television entertainment system complete with "in-house"
local broadcast capabilities to allow the delivery of health care
specific programs such as educational programs for new parents,
cancer patients, physiotherapy treatments, etc. |
 |
Microprocessor based fire alarm and protection system. |
 |
Computerized card access and door security systems. |
 |
750 kW standby diesel power generation, complete with dual
automatic transfer system. |
It is anticipated that the new GOCB building will require and would
benefit from many of the design features that have been incorporated
into the new East Prince Health Care Facility.
